HIDUP BIASA

[this letter gives an analysis of the struggle in Kulon Progo in terms of the recent national debate about the status of the Sultanate of Jogja within Indonesia, as well as an update on the farmers' struggle including some recent actions and the attempts of local NGOs to cause divisions in the autonomous struggle]

We are small loose collective (informal) in Yogyakarta, located in central Java, a region considered as “special territory” inside the democratic state due to its historical role as a Kingdom of Java, and for the same reason, some of the old feudal rules still preserved inside the so called democratic state.

Hal ini berlangsung tanpa perlu mengatakan, para anarkis janganlah mencoblos. Setelah semuanya, kita tidak ingin mewakilkan hidup kita, kita ingin menghidupi langsung hidup kita. Tidakkah hal tersebut berkontradiksi dengan prinsip keanarkisan kita untuk mencoblos?

Tapi apa makna hal tersebut bagi seorang anarkis? Berapa banyak yang menggunakan label ini sebagaimana mereka tetap melanjutkan pergi ke kantor setiap hari dalam kepatuhan untuk membayar uang sewa dan segala tagihan, agar mobil mereka dapat tetap melaju di jalanan, dan menghidupi keluarga mereka—sebagaimana halnya nuklir dan kekuasaan yang menghidupi perangkat stereo, TV, dan komputer-komputer mereka? Atau mungkin mereka yang duduk di latar kampus, mengumpulkan berbagai gelar sarjana—mencari sebuah tempat dalam struktur hierarki intelejensi... mereka tidak mencoblos. Mereka adalah mereka yang berpikir keluar dari masyarakat dengan memilih menjadi dasar anak tangga—mengikuti secara membabi buta segala pegangan dan sampah, yang telah merasa cukup untuk membeli komoditi subkultur terbaru dan makanan murah berikutnya. Tak ada satu pun dari orang-orang ini yang mencoblos; mereka pasti para anarkis.

Berada di antara massa yang ramai memang terkadang memberikan sebuah ilusi tentang kekuatan, maupun kemenangan. Massa yang besar memang memberi dukungan psikologis yang besar bahwa kita mewakili atau terwakilkan, dan ide-ide kita didukung oleh banyak orang. Tentu saja kondisi seperti itu memberi kita dorongan moral yang besar.

Namun, sekali lagi, kita harus mempertanyakan beberapa hal pokok mengenai massa, atau lebih tepatnya gerombolan. Apakah dukungan dalam bentuk massa yang besar merupakan dukungan kritis? Apakah tiap-tiap orang yang berada dalam lautan massa tersebut sadar tentang apa yang sedang mereka jalani? Siapakah yang memegang kendali terhadap kekuatan massa yang besar tersebut?

Wikileaks continues to make almost daily headlines. Aside from the various revelations, there are also two widely told stories that are supposed to help us put these leaks into context. ---- The first story is that the leaks are nothing more than gossip. They are stories about Gaddafi’s nurse and what an ambassador thinks of David Cameron. Anyone who isn’t a tabloid reader or nosey-parker should be disinterested in the content. ---- The other story is that the world is soon going to be brought inexorably towards conflict, possibly even World War III because of the terrorist activities of Julian Assange. In this narrative we have the kingpin of the worlds most powerful information terrorist organisation running roughshod over the US and it’s allies. ---- Both of these stories, while almost entirely contradictory, have at least two things in common. They’re both convenient for the US establishment and they’re both complete rubbish.
